Carter Butland

“Not one to mince words, Henry Ford noted that “coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.”  My professional working relationship with Carter Butland clearly illustrates this adage.  Carter and I came together during a company merger, stayed together through changes within our team, management, and corporate, and worked together tirelessly on many successful placements and projects.  Through all this, Carter proved himself both a brilliant sales person as well as an engaging co-worker who was a genuine pleasure to collaborate with.    Carter set the tone for our IT team.  A natural extrovert, he strove to build trusting, lasting relationships within the team and beyond.  In third-party recruiting, it’s easy for sales people to feel their place is superior to others on the team.  Carter bucked that norm entirely.  His previous experience as a recruiter made him an empathetic, unassuming lead.  Whenever I or another recruiter was struggling, Carter always approached the problem constructively and collaboratively, drawing on his own extensive knowledge.  He also possessed a knack for effectively mentoring junior team members.  Not only was he able to deliver new and unfamiliar content in an approachable manner but he was also able to provide truly helpful, applicable feedback so that our junior team members (myself included) could improve and grow.    Carter’s communication skills and emotional intelligence expand beyond the bull pen.  We regularly worked with a range of hiring managers, HR specialists, and C-suite executives across a variety of industries and different-sized companies, and Carter was able to quickly adapt his approach and tone to fit any situation.  His ability to read a room and respond accordingly is an art.  What’s more remarkable still is the fact that Carter consistently manages to be himself, no matter the scenario.  Being oneself shouldn’t be “rocket surgery,” but it is rare these days--especially in sales.  Carter’s authenticity ultimately resonates with people and convinces them to work with him and Modis.       As an individual performer in the office, Carter’s work ethic and grit are unparalleled.  He never shies away from difficult tasks and gives 100% every time, on every project, for every client.  He turns up early and stay late when necessary.  He supports our clients and contractors at all hours.  He is a critical thinker and problem solver who, when he doesn't have an answer, will find one.    And failure never fazes him—rather, it empowers him to be even more creative and dedicated.  His fervor and care for the job drove me to do better and do more, as I knew he would always have my back under any circumstance, and I could count on him to follow through on his word.    The absolute worst part of moving on from Modis is leaving my collaboration with Carter.  I have Carter to thank for shaping me both as a professional and a person.  He is a strong asset to Modis, ”
