A major…Coder Kids is a nonprofit volunteer organization created to encourage kids ages 7-17 to learn about computer programming, and to develop their interests in all areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through mentoring and through active, hands-on learning in computer science.
No programming knowledge or experience is required. Our approach is to have the kids program their own games in a mentored workshop setting to keep their interest at a high level. A major focus is using the learning programming language Scratch developed at MIT. Our more advanced coder kids learn javascript, html and CSS.
We especially want to encourage girls and kids from underrepresented groups to get involved with learning programming and to explore STEM careers.
We hold monthly workshops on weekends in the Harrisburg, PA metro area. These workshops have been completely free of charge, and have been sponsored by local companies including Capital Blue Cross and Deloitte. In our first 10 months of operation, we have seen over 250 kids in our workshops.
