How would you handle delays in production due to unforeseen circumstances with your international suppliers?

The new normal that is the result of the Covid years and "trade wars" has resulted in an emphasis on multi region multi Sourcing strategies. The challenge is cost as a result of splitting orders, quality assurance timeliness related to PPAP or other processes and agility of the raw materials supply chain. Because of these factors it's important to use a triage approach to assess actual risks and time to deploy. Diligent risk assessment requires an analysis of the manufacturing process and the raw materials supply chain to ensure an effective response to disruption.

Always remember that Why is the most powerful question. Why do we do it this way? Why is this a good idea? Why is this a bad idea? And make sure not to stop at the first answer ask why to the answer because that helps remove bias and reinforces context.

How can you incorporate vendor feedback into performance evaluations?

Vendor evaluation should be like employee evaluation. Start with an understanding of 4 or 5 goals the vendor should be meeting. Then get them to evaluate themselves on those goals. Ask for improvement methods in the self evaluation. Ask how the customer can help the vendor meet those goals. Ask if other customers make it easier to meet those goals.

You’re negotiating with a supplier remotely. How can you ensure you get the best deal?

The agenda must see both sides in the negotiation. For evert topic that is centered on the supply requirements as a customer there needs to be a similar topic for the supplier to respond. The goal is lowest total cost of ownership but to get there a firm understanding of total cost to produce and how the cost drivers are viewed by the supplier is necessary.

You’re developing a supplier sourcing strategy. How do you know if it’s working?

Use the 5 why's when goal setting. A new supplier either fills a new requirement or replaces an existing source. By using the 5 why's you have a clear understanding of the root cause of the need and a better path to solve rather root cause.

How can vendor sourcing training improve your team's productivity?

Vendors are no different then employees. They take time and patience to grow and are very costly to replace. Collaboration and transparency on both sides help the growth process. An employee left in the dark, whose inputs are discounted and whose performance is always criticized with no effort to help in improvement will perform badly and never grow to respect its manager or the company. Vendors are the same.
