I love using the Google design sprint exercise/ framework to truly tackle the problem we’re solving for. Design mockups, and identify a sample customer to walkthrough with. I’ve found this to be the fastest way to get clear customer feedback, identify design flaws and create alignment across product, Eng and design teams.

When I first started my career I thought as long as I got paid for my efforts I would be fine. After the first year, I realized I wanted to be appreciated for my efforts. I wanted to be acknowledged for my contributions and impact. It’s human nature, we all want to be appreciated and acknowledged. And on that note, beware of managers who steal their employees work as theirs and don’t share the credit. I know a few. Some “managers” should not be people managers and it’s perfectly ok. High performing individual contributors do not need to be forced to play manager.

Yes! One key aspect of trust is making sure words and actions are aligned from management. Also, transparency throughout the process is key! Too many organizations say they believe in transparency, advertise to their employees their roles are safe and then a month later employees find out their roles have been cut and they no longer have access. I won’t name names but you can connect the dots. 🤠

Agreed 💯!!! I would add, make sure the vision is sticky and bring the team in co-creating the vision so buy-in from the top down just flows with limited friction.

What are the best ways to prepare for a career in information security while still in school?

There’s truly nothing like hands-on experience. Lots of people have perspectives on how to solve security issues or best practices. Frameworks and how-tos are great tools but the learnings from failures/ wins in the war room with peers or seasoned professionals are unmatched.
