Grunitzky, who has started several companies in the magazine and advertising fields, recently began work on a new venture—a mobile and social media company, focused on Africa. He is working hard to develop, maintain, and leverage an extensive personal and professional network across three continents—all while being a full-time student in the MIT Sloan Fellows Program in Innovation and Global Leadership.

The case considers the steps he has taken to build and cultivate a network that creates value for both him and others. The case was taught to second-year MBA students in the “Power & Influence” class, where Grunitzky was invited to attend as the protagonist.

The case is now available for purchase, with a short summary, on Harvard’s website.

    Grasset

Once upon a time before crack, photographer Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, working the streets of New York City, capturing the faces and places of an era that have long since disappeared. Ken Johnson of the New York Times wrote that the work was “deeply unpretentious and undistracted by the trendy new aesthetics or technologies, Mr. Shabazz is the best kind of photojournalist: one driven simply by curiosity about other human beings.”

They often think, consume, date, or marry outside of their race, religion, or nationality. They travel on a whim to a faraway lands, dress unconventionally and codify their own styles. They live in areas their parents were once barred from and take jobs previously considered outside of their leagues. They are comfortable listening to, creating, and criticizing music outside of their original cultures and often display high levels of creativity in various progressive disciplines. Some call transculturalists heretics; many call them the future.

Transculturalism: How the World Is Coming Together features contributions from such transculturalist visionaries as photographers Jamel Shabazz, Larry Clark, and Ellen von Unwerth; writers Alix Sharkey, Stephen Greco, and Anicee Gaddis; and includes profiles of celebrity transculturalists Alicia Keys, Rosario Dawson, and Tiffany Limos.

The Austrian Cultural Forum New York and MUSA Vienna are proud to present Beauty Contest, an exhibition featuring works by 20 internationally acclaimed and emerging artists who reflect critically on contemporary global society’s obsession and fascination with physical appearance. Following its run at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, the exhibition will then travel to Vienna in February 2012 where it will be shown in the galleries of MUSA Vienna.

Beauty Contest, which was curated by Claude Grunitzky, Andreas Stadler and Berthold Ecker, deals with one of the most trivial everyday experiences: the daily encounter with human beauty and its social construction. A perennial anthropologic subject dating back to the writings of ancient Greek philosophers the exhibition will present critical viewpoints of some of the most antiquated notions of universal beauty. Evidence from the sexual revolution and feminism, as well as the gay, lesbian and transgender movements have eroded clear definitions of who and what is beautiful – and who and what is not. Through their artworks the artists examine the emancipation of hidden structures of repression toward gender, race, and age.

The artworks, which include videos, paintings, sculptures, installations, and performance art, are drawn from the self-examination, self-perception, and self-definition of the individual artists, many of whom are influenced by female avant-garde artists such as Austrian artist Maria Lassnig and New York based Cindy Sherman.
