While we have a lot of elements of a typical camp, our main focus is helping our campers grow in to the brave leaders they are destined to be. Our program focuses on four key elements: Leadership, Community Building, Self Realization, and Service. We use workshops, adventure, creative programming, service projects, peer connections, and positive role models to create a safe space where youth can thrive. With the skills learned at camp, our campers will be primed to thrive in their schools, workplace, and personal life. In addition, our campers will have the knowledge and confidence to be more impactful leaders and implement innovative social change in their communities.

Children’s HealthWatch, an organization at Boston Medical Center (BMC) concerned with the wellbeing and health of children, serves a large population with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Interpretation services at BMC are numerous, however, they are not always utilized properly, leading to a decrease in quality of care for LEP patients. Research suggests with increased use of properly trained medical interpreters, patient satisfaction and quality of care will increase, while cost and number of patient visits will decrease. Included is an outline of the different types of interpretation used in medical settings as well as consequences of bad interpretation methods and barriers to good interpretation. This paper proposes that Children’s HealthWatch should advocate for better utilization of interpreter services at BMC through: education of medical personnel on positive outcomes through interpreters, education/empowerment of LEP patients to request interpreter services, and collaboration with BMC board members to improve policies concerning interpreter services. These recommendations can help BMC to improve their services while also increasing the success of Children’s HealthWatch.

  • CDC vs. WHO Growth Charts: Discrepancies & Damaging Effects on Children

In 2006, the WHO published new standards for children’s growth charts based on data collected from 6 different countries around the world. In September 2010, the AAP recommended to use these standards for American children up to age two rather than the historically accepted CDC and Prevention/National Center for Health Statistics charts. Children’s HealthWatch is working on a project to study the discrepancies between the two and how these differences affect children in the US who are classified as under weight for age using the different standards. The projected outcome is that some children who would have been classified as underweight by CDC/NCHS references will appear normal by WHO standards. Based on my research, using the WHO growth chart standards, FTT can be detected earlier in life compared to the CDC charts which results in intervention at an earlier age. The Children’s HealthWatch dataset, however, has shown 1,245 children between the ages of 6 and 24months who were underweight by CDC/NCHS standards but not by WHO standards.
