Make sure you are on point with the technology before you arrive. Any free time - read - think about it become a master of that space. The tech world is a meritocracy. Least it used to be. Once you understand that and go forward accordingly you find yourself at the top rather quickly.

You’re behind schedule on a system architecture project. What can you do to get back on track?
Get to work. Don't expect to get home at reasonable hours until on point. There's no magic to it. Just get it done or find the right person/people who can. To be 2 months behind on an architecture isn't acceptable. So going forward, that team needs to be assessed.

What are some of the skills and competencies that software engineers need to develop for the future?
Learn how everything works and don't rely on libraries. Optimize what you do and then make it elegant. Lastly, stop using languages that sit in top of 20 others. Get back to assembly/C. Maybe then we won't need 2TB drives.
