  • Field Guides To Ensuring Voter Intent

    - Present

Initially funded through Kickstarter backing, developed a series of short booklets -- each one holds brilliantly researched, guideline gems and examples about a specific and far-too-common election design problem. The form factor is designed for the busy county election official to pick up and within minutes learn useful, field-researched, critical design techniques that help ensure that every vote is cast as voters intend.

The first four Field Guides were published in June 2012. The next two are based on new research conducted July to November 2012. They will be published in the first quarter of 2013.

  • Rethinking User Research for the Social Web

    - Present

When you look at what the social web is, there are some characteristics that I think we’re not taking into account very well in doing usability tests:

    - It’s about relationships among people
    - In context
    - Conducted fluidly, across time across time and space, continuously

I've been researching updated methods and techniques for understanding how users perform on the social web that take usability testing to a new level -- beyond limited prototypes with fictional data.

  • Redesign of Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot (FWAB)

    -

Working with Oxide Design Co., conducted an iterative design project to update the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) and Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot (FWAB) for the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP.org).

We conducted two rounds of usability test sessions, some with active duty military, some with civilians. Some sessions were in-person sessions, some were conducted remotely via screen sharing.

We conducted two rounds of usability test sessions, some with active duty military, some with civilians. Some sessions were in-person sessions, some were conducted remotely via screen sharing.

Uniformed and overseas civilians use the FPCA to register to vote and request a regular absentee ballot from their stateside voting jurisdiction. If the regular absentee ballot doesn't show up for some reason, US citizens living abroad can download a fillable PDF from FVAP.org of the FWAB to cast their votes.

  • Design Museum Everywhere

    Board member

    - Present

The mission of the Design Museum is to bring the transformative power of design everywhere through access (design is for everyone), improvement (design solves problems, and community (design is collaborative). I'll be working on the board to bring a lens of civic innovation, along with identifying geographic and virtual spaces where design is already happening that the Design Museum can elevate and amplify.
