“Danielle was HR Manager during my time at General Dynamics and was very resourceful and helpful. She showed her expertise in all aspects of employee human resource management daily. I found her to always have the answer to anything I needed and when laid off for the first time in 26 years, found her to be helpful in every question or need that arose in a difficult time for me personally. Anyone with a chance to get her on board with their company in the future should jump at the chance!”

Your company is struggling with performance. How can you use change management to help?
What is the reason for the performance to be suffering? What are the KPIs that are being missed? Assess the current organization...What is keeping the company from hitting its targets? Before any changes are made, you need to understand the problems that you need to solve. Using tools such as SWOT or gap analysis can help you pinpoint the areas that need addressed. Is this a new issue, did the company hit their performance goals prior to this year? What changed?

How can mentoring and coaching help non-profit leaders?
Mentoring is something that a lot of people don't realize the value of, I wish I had known the value of a mentor earlier in my career. I was fortunate to have one, anyway, but I would have actively sought out other mentors in other areas, as well. If you are a new professional starting out, and don't yet have a mentor, I suggest asking people you see and admire to be your mentor. You won't regret it. Coaching is also important. As an HR Professional, coaching happens daily in my role. We can't function alone. We need people to help us and guide us to be successful. Coaching managers on the best way forward in situations is part of the role. Coaching is situational, while mentoring is more long-term and multi-dimensional.

What are the most effective ways to learn from HR internship experiences?
HR is all about experience, education is important, but experience is deemed as just as important. If you have an HR internship, I encourage you to look at all aspects of HR and ask your supervisor for opportunities to be exposed to all of the areas of HR in the organization. This will give you insight of what Payroll, Talent Acquisition, Employee Relations, Training, etc are like in the real world and not just in the textbook. This could also help you to decide the area(s) you want to specialize in when you enter the job market.
