How can you negotiate better payment terms in a financial context?
A past employer of mine put a big push on growing payment terms w venders. I procured freight with 400 providers. I knew that mandating longer pay terms would lead to rate increases at some point. My strategy was to negotiate all pieces of the freight contract. The carriers rate became a combination of payment terms and line haul. When I awarded lanes carriers that had lower cost of capital may choose to grant us increased payment terns vs. lower rate per mile. I had a calcualtion for what that was worth to us and I would award lanes on the best overall financial solution. Carriers could grow with us by pulling either lever. If two lines hauls were the same and 1 carrier had longer pay terms they would be the preferred provider
