By delegating tasks to team members you give them the opportunity to grow in their career and achieve their goals. You also give them the confidence to be willing to work outside their comfort zone. Prior to delegating, it is important to understand their skillset, goals and willingness to stretch themselves. It requires you to take on a coaching role and guide them through the process of growing and changing. Communication is key to help them continue to succeed in the task, but remember to give them enough autonomy to do the task to completion.

In my experience, when I have encountered having a new boss to report to, the first thing I do is schedule a one-on-one meeting with them to get to know each other and discuss expectations. I have found that asking questions relating to communication and expectations helps each other at the stage for a successful working relationship. I have regularly scheduled one-on-one’s set up throughout the year to make sure we are on the same page and are communicating well.

In my experience, leaders with high EI tend to have the most successful teams. In business you must be able to listen to, communicate with, and empathize with your team. Understanding the personal career goals or challenges a team member is working on and using your EI skills to help guide and direct them is so valuable as a manager or leader.

Communication and setting expectations are crucial to meeting deadlines. To effectively negotiate to meet your deadlines you must be able to gain the agreement and trust of your team. They must understand the importance of meeting the deadline. I personally have always said “if I understand the why behind the initiative, I can easily get onboard”. Your team will help you achieve meeting the deadline as long as you openly communicate the initiative and the expectations.

Plan your work and work your plan. Blocking out dedicated time to work on your project to meet the deadline is essential to accomplishing your goal. Prioritize your efforts and be dedicated to the time you have set aside for the project. Do not let distractions get you off track.
