My PhD focussed on the use of distributed file systems in high-performance computing.. My investigation included the role of standardized protocols such as NFS in compute clusters, the interaction of NFS with parallel file systems, and the ability of NFS to bind disparate HPC communities together.

I was main researcher of pNFS, a standard extension to NFS that is embraced by numerous companies such as IBM, Netapp, EMC, and Panasas that provides direct storage access to a diversity of parallel file systems while preserving operating system and hardware platform independence. I published numerous papers on pNFS, worked with the IETF on the NFSv4.1 protocol, wrote the original Linux prototype, and am still involved in Linux pNFS development with the IBM Spectrum Scale (GPFS) file system.
