GCTC was launched in 2014 out of the White House Office of Science and Technology as a collaborative, public/private initiative for the development of smart cities and communities as an economic development initiative.

Led by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), “GCTC program has evolved to become a collaborative platform for cities, communities, industry, academic, and government stakeholders to jointly develop and deploy emerging technologies for smart cities and communities.” (https://www.nist.gov/ctl/smart-connected-systems-division/iot-devices-and-infrastructure-group/smart-americaglobal-0)

My role as co-chair of the Education Supercluster, along with colleague Ann Marcus (https://www.linkedin.com/in/annmarcus/), is to elevate the role of community engagement in developing priorities for municipal technology. As a network of smart city experts and advocates, we are capable of deploying the skills needed by cities desiring to improve the lives of their residents through infrastructure investments that both test and comply with standards developed by NIST and other government agencies.

GCTC's goal is to ensure deployment of smart city technology in partnership with communities, and the appropriate collection of data (holistic key performance indicators) to assist all levels of government to deploy trusted technology that improves the lives of residents and other community stakeholders.

I currently also serve a leadership role in development of a project in Portland under an NSF grant - Schools as Community Resilience Hubs. Focus is development of Buckman Elementary School as a Resilience Hub - see video for details! https://vimeo.com/817759181

The Jack London Improvement District Steering was created to guide the formation of a Business Improvement District in the Jack London District. Located along the historic and beautiful Jack London Square waterfront, the 18-month long process of creating a BID resulted in its approval by District taxpayers and the City Council in July 2013. This assessment district will be managed by District property owners (residential and commercial). Assessment funds will be used to deal with issues prioritized by the District members, including public safety, blight, and economic development. I served as President of the newly created BID until December 31, 2013. As I have moved my personal residence to San Leandro, I will not be able to participate on the new Board, but wish them well in its goals of creating an economically vibrant waterfront in Oakland!
