Top performers understand the whole picture and not just the tasks they and their team are responsible for. To keep it simple, a top performer is always looking for a win/win/win solution. Attitude is critical to their success and the success for the teams. A never quit attitude quickly stands out. Providing meaningful challenging roles with room for failure is critical to retaining these folks.
