3D printing technology has impacted the advancement of design, construction and socioeconomic sustainability of new communities around the world. This emerging technology enables a new vernacular for housing typologies- able to rapidly expand or repair the urban fabric in response to the housing needs of areas overwhelmed by poverty, homelessness or disasters. Reconfigurable designs composed of modular components (unlimited by complexity) are capable of adapting to specific environmental climates while maintaining a sensitivity to vernacular precedents. Time of construction is optimized through prefabrication, systems integration and advanced material science.3D printing technology provides an opportunity for a new construction paradigm consistent with the fabrication process of almost every other industry, while maintaining customizable capability inherent in the preferences of individual inhabitants and local communities around the planet. Implementations of this technology have the potential to change the economics of housing in world populations during our time- while increasing the accessibility of quality, sustainable and affordable habitats for everyone.

With its click-clacking typewriters and fog of cigarette smoke, the newsroom exactingly depicted in All the President's Men, the film about The Washington Post's reporting on the Watergate scandal, hardly seems like the early ancestor of the Post's current workplace. Yet it was. And the evolution from that Post newsroom to its current version—complete with AV screens, HD video cameras, and an elegant modernity—hinged on what is known as the convergence. The convergence brings together new digital tools and processes for content creation and distribution, enabling content to flow between platforms. It also necessitates interdisciplinary teams that work in non-traditional, rapid-fire ways to develop and distribute content.

The Post's former home, outfitted with high-paneled workstations, too many offices, and retro-fitted technology, was never designed for such workflows. Hence the media company's decision to hire Gensler and secure six floors in a building on DC's famed K Street.

The result is a home that is 92 percent open plan, thereby allowing reporters, engineers, social media specialists, and videographers to intermingle in a truly converged newsroom. In this converged environment, the news hub serves as the center of information. This centrally located, double-height space features a ribbon of monitors displaying the Post's real-time website analytics as well as news channels, news websites, and social media portals. The setup allows the Post to fine tune its content and distribution instantly.

Off the news hub sits the Ben Bradlee Story Conference Center, where the Post's editors gather twice daily to discuss news content. Increasingly, such content includes video. Hence the newsroom's offering of a traditional broadcast video studio and three live-shot settings that capture the newsroom's full length and branding, including the Post's iconic nameplate.

The Coca-Cola Company’s Workplace 2020 initiative encompasses the renovation of 2 million square feet of their Atlanta headquarters. A phased 5-year project incorporating 5 buildings,
3 courtyards, and ancillary spaces on campus, Gensler’s design focus has been on the transformation of all shared public spaces with an emphasis on capturing the unique brand of Coca-Cola.

Gensler created a new “Mainstreet” that connects disjointed buildings with a common experience designed to surprise and delight. The first move included a reimagined assembly space at the base of the executive tower. Marked by a two-story, dynamic water wall, the flexible space is made up of two halves—the front half is a dramatic lobby space with raised platform lounge seating, and the back half is a state-of-the-art meeting space.

The second major move creates a new gathering space and nerve center for the entire campus, combining a conference center, 450-seat auditorium, five dining venues, and other amenities. The renovation of the campus’ most central building created an opportunity to foster a level of engagement that didn’t exist previously—interior dining destinations connect to outdoor courtyards on the first level, and a double-height concourse creates the link to the rest of campus. The concourse is animated with a super-sized flip disc wall that displays ever-changing messaging to engage associates with Coca-Cola’s up-to-the-minute campaigns.

The Coca-Cola Company is one of the most loved brands worldwide. Gensler took cues from their secret recipe and design a brand experience that both refreshes and inspires moments of optimism and happiness. A real-time digital feed, a large-scaled video wall, and a Coke-can hanging sculpture are some of the brand features Gensler introduced to create an environment that is truly unique to Coca-Cola.

The updated lobby also provides enhanced security and upgrades to key building systems including elevators, security monitoring, lighting and controls, and fire command system.

The renovation significantly enhanced the entry which included new revolving doors and swing doors and the replacement of the existing concierge desk. New turnstiles were added for enhanced access control and the lobby newsstand was re-designed to improve the building’s service experience. The elevator interiors were upgraded along with the installation of a new elevator destination dispatch control. The redesign also consisted of new terrazzo flooring throughout the space and a new ceiling and lighting system.

The highlight of the lobby is the dramatic LED light sculpture by world-renowned artist, Leo Villareal. Gensler coordinated closely with Mr. Villareal in the design of the lighting sculpture which truly transforms the space.

  • Facebook Campus (Menlo Park, CA)

Gensler's design plan delicately balanced the two objectives of creating a canvass for employees to be inspired and self-expressive with Facebook's need to use its new workspace as part of its broader organizational strategy to drive innovation. Gensler's design plan delicately balanced the two objectives of creating a canvass for employees to be inspired and self-expressive with Facebook's need to use its new workspace as part of its broader organizational strategy to drive innovation. An in-depth investigation into a new model of the high-performance workplace for Facebook's engineers supported a successful implementation of new space types, allowing for unprecedented team-focused collaboration within and between engineering groups.

This campus is built on the premise that innovation isn't driven by the amount of collaboration, but rather by the quality of collaboration. And it's this critical mix of collaboration and focused work that distinguishes companies like Facebook. Groups can innovate and individuals can innovate; by providing for both, a company like Facebook can accelerate innovation in ways neither approach can do alone.
