“I worked with Doug over the past year and was incredibly impressed by his ability to understand and implement new concepts that are rarely approached or considered. Doug was able to balance the software architecture, management of a project, leading a team, and communicating highly technical concepts to business stakeholders with ease.”

How can you adapt to changes in database technology?
As a few others have noted the most fundamental thing is to understand the mission(s) in detail -- what needs to be accomplished -- and to select the best tool for each job. The database technology best suited to capturing highly-normalized business entity data, i.e. "data in" -- a relational database management system (RDBMS) -- hasn't changed significantly in 50 years. Likewise, the database technology best suited to supporting reporting, analytics, decision support, etc with de-normalized, enterprise-wide data, i.e. "data out" -- a dimensional database or data warehouse -- performs much better now and provides better tools but is still structured in much the same way. And NOSQL databases for documents and other needs now exist.

What are the best practices for designing a solution architecture that helps your team acquire new customers?
Solution architecture is an activity -- something we do, not something we create, as illustrated by the 5 preceding actions: Understand, Align, Use, Focus, and Incorporate. We need a better name for the thing we are designing, e.g. "What are the best practices for designing an *integrated business and technology approach* that helps your team acquire new customers?" Architecture is a verb, not a noun. ;) https://medium.com/@frickingruvin/defining-architecture-edcb334d5cbb

Software products can change structurally and can intentionally alter the behavior of their features as the result of explicit or implicit subscriber decisions and actions.

Defining Architecture
Medium
There are a number of inadequate and (therefore?) fairly tortured definitions for the word “architecture”. They all seem to miss what I consider to be the main point and to focus instead on methods or motivations for physical construction and the differences in the meaning of the term when used in various domains, e.g. physical structures, information systems, etc.

The Greatest User Story Ever Told
Medium
User stories can be a great way to capture requirements for software development, but striking the right balance between simplicity and detail depends on understanding your goals, your organization’s culture, and the value user stories can provide.

UK Online Lottery

Software Architect on the first true online lottery, i.e. prizes up to pounds £1MM (GBP) determined by a random number generator (RNG) rather than printing up a known, finite set of prizes beforehand. This means that it was theoretically possible for there to be more than one £1MM prize.
We also were required to "geo-fence" the application to prevent play from the U.S. where gaming was illegal. This was long before there were APIs that solved the geo-fencing problem.

In addition GTECH wanted not only to deliver a successful UK solution but to develop an online lottery system that they could sell in any country.
This all-star Viant team made it all work.Other creatorsSee project
