This will make or break your international endeavors. either you take the time to go to the country, learn the language, know the culture and invest in getting familiar with your future customer or invest in identifying a local who you will partner with to be your representative. It’s always easier and safer to do it yourself. Creating a partnership with someone that you have never met, and lives in a different culture has many pitfalls. That being said, if you are going international in a big way, you will eventually have to do this and trust your instincts to find the right individuals to be your representatives in the various countries.

Again, this is an area where culture and language and situational awareness that only comes with an experienced resident of the country you are trying to do business in is crucial. Many countries, even in the European Union, have vast differences in how they approach the legalities and regulatory requirements for international business. Many times, if you don’t know someone local, getting simple, government permits signed will take months.

Boots on the ground- yours or somebody you trust. It’s easy to simply throw darts at a map or to look at an Excel spreadsheet for potential buyers for your product. But if you’re going to go into a market that is international, you need someone to be fully entrenched in the culture, the language, and the localities you’re interested in. It doesn’t have to be you, but it does have to be someone you trust. Language and culture will eat even the best products for lunch. If you cannot communicate beyond Google Translate and you’ve never been in the country before, you are going to struggle. Even if your product is software, if you’re trying to get into a new market, someone needs to physically be there.
