And the stronger the collaboration, the stronger our society and economy will be.” -Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, President, University of Maryland, Baltimore County “Business leaders must develop clear pathways to STEM careers. This book provides a framework for how business, education, and communities can cultivate a sustainable pipeline of STEM talent.” -Michael Norris, COO, Sodexo What will it take to close the skills gap and lead the STEM workforce revolution? Science, technology, engineering, and math are at the heart of the 21st century jobs-driven economy, challenging education institutions and companies to train and source an increasingly technical workforce. New models of partnership drive scalable solutions that engage underrepresented communities and equip students with the skills and competencies that companies demand. Aligning corporate, education, and community partners requires that we rethink and redesign the system that supports STEM education and workforce preparedness. What’s at stake? Nothing less than the sustainability of our schools, the innovative engines of our businesses, the prosperity of communities, and the global competitiveness of our economies.

Creating Digital Fluency, State by State, City by City: Computer Science Education in the U.S.
Tata Consultancy Services, STEMconnector
Across industries, businesses are expecting the next generation of employees to have digital fluency: which means having a mastery of digital technology beyond the classroom, to solve real-life problems. Yet education is currently not delivering the skills needed to go from college to careers, or from skills to jobs. With 73 percent of new science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) jobs created from 2010 to 2020 projected to require a foundation in computer science (CS), a…
Across industries, businesses are expecting the next generation of employees to have digital fluency: which means having a mastery of digital technology beyond the classroom, to solve real-life problems. Yet education is currently not delivering the skills needed to go from college to careers, or from skills to jobs. With 73 percent of new science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) jobs created from 2010 to 2020 projected to require a foundation in computer science (CS), a serious skills shortage is developing. The progress in education and the development of technology are out-of-sync in both methodology and rate of change.
In response to this need, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), an IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, joined with STEMConnector®, a leading advocacy organization for STEM education and careers, to host a Computer Science roundtable on May 16, 2014, at the New York Academy of Sciences in at 7 World Trade Center, New York. Events such as this roundtable build a firm foundation for consensus, cross-sector partnerships and shared goals for access to STEM education and career opportunities for America’s youth.
The roundtable built upon the success of the executive roundtable on CS Education and Careers held at Washington, D.C., on September 6, 2013. By furthering this conversation and documenting the best practices as observed by organizations leading grassroots and on-the-ground efforts, TCS & and STEMConnector® help to continue to help to build a blueprint for digital fluency. The focus of the May 16th roundtable was on how states and cities are advancing computer science education, what the industry is doing to advance computer skills, and how we can identify, replicate, and scale best practices resulting from these efforts. This white paper shares the insights and solutions that emerged from the round table discussion.Other authorsSee publication -

Women in STEM: Realizing the Potential
STEMconnector and Tata Consultancy Services
Those four words contain the key to the United States holding its position as the innovation and technology leader of the world, given that 80 percent of the fastest growing occupations in the U.S. depend upon a mastery of mathematics and scientific knowledge and skills.
STEM is also the key to U.S. employment and prosperity, because it’s where the jobs are. Between 2010 and
2020, STEM-related employment is projected to increase by 16 percent to more than 8.5 million jobs. STEM is also the key to U.S. employment and prosperity, because it’s where the jobs are. Between 2010 and
2020, STEM-related employment is projected to increase by 16 percent to more than 8.5 million jobs. And as early as 2018, the nation faces a skills shortage of 230,000 STEM employees. Now consider this figure: More than 75 percent of STEM workers are male. Just under 25 percent are female - even though women fill close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy.
The gap between those numbers tells a story of squandered human potential— untapped talent that this country can ill afford to lose. Mentorship can be part of the solution. High-quality skills-based mentoring and sponsorship programs that connect girls and young women with STEM professionals can significantly increase the number of women who pursue and succeed in STEM fields.
This white paper brings together facts that illuminate the opportunity and the gaps for women in STEM education
and careers. It ends with a call for action—to support Million Women Mentors as we seek one million women and men to serve as STEM mentors for girls and young women by 2018.Other authorsSee publication -
