  • Redefining the Value Proposition of the Law Library

Ark Group's Best Practices & Management Strategies for Law Firm Library, Research & Information Services

As Knowledge, Library & Information Service professionals we are no doubt responsible for more information than ever before. If people needed us to help them navigate stacks and terminals of the past, imagine how much more they need us now that the “world of information” is becoming the "library" in which they must work. As Knowledge, Library & Information Service professionals we are no doubt responsible for more information than ever before. If people needed us to help them navigate stacks and terminals of the past, imagine how much more they need us now that the “world of information” is becoming the "library" in which they must work. We are no longer simply curetting collections, but rather governing access and providing useful context and analysis. And the manner in which we deliver services, share knowledge, and/or demonstrate our expertise will continue to evolve, as macro shifts continue to reshape the practice and
business of law. But how are we to redefine ourselves as lynchpins of the work-flow equation? A lot of frustration seem to arise from a failure of leadership to properly value library staff and operations. This value however becomes easier to recognize when services are integrated and staff are involved in strategic
decisions. Will we ultimately be defined by the strategic relationships we have within the firm—as we increasingly find ourselves tasked with doing things that are considered “outside the box” or more strategic in nature? What business goals can we seek to accomplish via practice support initiatives? And how can we make sure that as information strategists and knowledge workers, we have the opportunity to leverage our unique skill set in step with a changing landscape?
