Geospatial Analysis of the Spatiotemporal Relationship of Injection Wells to Induced Seismicity

1960s in Denver, Colorado as a result of a chemical disposal well at Rocky
Mountain Arsenal. With the advent of oil and gas hydraulic fracturing of wells
(“fracking”), there has been a heightened awareness and speculation that
this practice is related to man-made earthquakes, known in the scientific
community as induced earthquakes. This research analyzed the spatial and
temporal relationship of magnitude ≥ 3 earthquakes and injection wells with
a goal of determining if there is a scientific link between the location of the
wells and the earthquakes. Geospatial analysis revealed both spatial and
temporal relationships in several oil and gas basins in the lower 48
continental United States.
