Projects

  • Graduate Capstone

    -

I worked with a team of 21 Masters Students on analyzing options available to Hoosier Energy - a rural electric membership cooperative - for complying with the Clean Power Plan.

  • Undergraduate Honors Thesis

    -

My thesis explored the effects of data-driven electricity feedback (via energy monitors) on energy consumption behavior of students in the University of Dayton student neighborhood.

  • Building an RF Spin Flipper

    -

I designed a neutron spin flipper to be constructed and used in an experiment which will search for the rotation of the plane of polarization of a neutron as it passes through a meter of liquid helium. My work required the use of Autodesk Inventor, Mathematica, and COMSOL, along with an understanding of several topics in quantum and nuclear physics.

  • Lead Remediation Testing in Dayton, OH

    -

I worked with a team of students to research practical methods to remediate lead in a local contaminated neighborhood in the Dayton area. We tested two methods suggested by available scientific literature - phytoremediation and the use of fish bone meal. After months of growing Indian Mustard in contaminated soil in a makeshift greenhouse and allowing soil mixed with fish bone meal to react, lead concentration tests revealed no statistically significant reduction in the metal. Further research is needed, but we were able to leave the residents of the neighborhood with advice on how to minimize exposure to lead.
