Manage Expectations Through Effective Crisis Communications The media and public have the same concerns in every disaster: 1) How will this affect me? 2) How much worse will it get? 3) When will it get better/when will conditions improve? In predictable weather disasters, it is vital to communicate before, during, and after the event. In a sudden crisis, such as an explosion, communications must happen in the first 15 minutes with more details before the end of the first hour. Too many companies take 3 to 4 hours to issue their first statement. By then, the narrative has been defined by social media and speculation. Crisis communications software, such as the new SituationHub system can turn out media-ready statements in 3-5 minutes.

Abel & Fernandes with Braud Communication facilitated a crisis communication and media training for REPOA members. The aim for this training was to train the institutions staff on how to communicate to the media. The key focus areas were messaging, media engagement and crisis communication. We trained 35 staff.
