Objective: To determine if student gender was related to attitudes towards fruits and vegetables and willingness to try new foods.
Study Design, setting, participants: 18 elementary schools in Indiana were selected by cluster sampling. Boy and girl student volunteers (n=2057) were invited to complete anonymous questionnaires at the beginning of the 2011 school year in a cross-sectional design.
Outcome, Measures and Analysis: Attitudes towards fruits and vegetables and willingness to try new foods were collected with a five point scale then transformed to dichotomous values. Chi-square analyses were performed to compare the distribution of attitudes towards fruits and vegetables, and willingness to try new foods among the groups of boys and girls.
Results: More girls believed eating fruits (p<0.01) and vegetables (p<0.01) were cool than boys. Girls reported the taste of fruits (p<0.01) and vegetables (p<0.01) to be better than boys. In addition, more girls were willing to try new foods (p<0.01).
Conclusion and implication: Attitudes towards eating fruits and vegetables and willingness to try new food varied greatly between genders in these 4th-6th graders. Underlying reasons for these gender differences should be examined in future studies. Parents and educators then can be directed to incorporate separate strategies to promote fruit and vegetable intake to boys and girls.
