    Abstract:
In Terms of Service (ToS) contracts for mobile software applications, there are widespread and increasing uses of “dark patterns” and other subtly manipulative techniques that are categorized as deceptive marketing, which violates FTC Act’s commerce rules. Our focus is on the technological factors of UI (user interface) on current contracts. We propose a remedy of industry-set and best-practice guidelines under federal supervision, which can help establish enforceable industry standards without chilling innovation. The only way to support a user’s rights to privacy protection and transparency would be to create a set of guidelines and a model UI for usability and clarity that regulate UIs and potential dark patterns to ensure that a user is giving fully-informed consent through the ToS. Our solution is a set of guidelines with a model prototype UI that balances the needs of the major stakeholders: the government, the users, and the companies.

  • SLC41A1, a Na+/Mg2+ exchanger, is down-regulated during exercise.

    Biomedical Reports

    Abstract:
Serum magnesium (Mg) levels are closely controlled through a variety of Mg transporters and ionic channels during physiological conditions. These levels have been shown to increase during exercise. However, the effect of Mg transporter expression during exercise remains to be determined. The purpose of this study was to examine the gene expression of SLC41A1, a Na+/Mg2+ exchanger, during exercise. In the present study, male C57BL/6JNarl mice (n=16, 8 weeks old) were subjected to 3…

In the present study, male C57BL/6JNarl mice (n=16, 8 weeks old) were subjected to 3 h forced exercise on a treadmill. The mice in the control and Mg groups were injected with saline and Mg (MgSO4, 90 mg/kg, intraperitoneal), respectively. Blood samples were obtained at three time points: prior to, following and 24 h after exercise. The gene expression levels of SLC41A1 were significantly downregulated to 23.6±4.6 and 12.6±10.2% following exercise in the control and Mg groups, respectively. The expression levels returned to the basal levels 24 h after exercise in the two groups and there was no significant difference found between the two groups. The downregulated role of SLC41A1 expression and its interaction with the Mg status in exercise requires further investigation.

Honors & Awards

  • First Place in Microsoft/ACM Student Research Competition

Microsoft and Association of Computing Machinery SIGDOC

Sponsored by MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and Microsoft, I presented with my MIT co-researcher Jenny Yao in Halifax on a research study we decided to pursue, with the support of Dr. Danny Weitzner and Dr. Hal Abelson. We were encouraged to build upon our initial research done in 6.805 to make it a full-blown study. Conference proceeding listed. More details at-
