You’re starting a new job in sustainability. How can you make sure you stand out as a self-starter?
For sustainability professionals beginning a new role, self starters must ask questions and listen, listen, and listen more. Yes, stay updated on new sustainability regulations and frameworks. But equally, if not more important, is to learn the corporate culture, how much change can be tolerated, how change is driven, and understand priorities and business drivers. Listening is paramount in building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Sustainability professionals that are great listeners and have strong relationships will be able to adeptly navigate the organization. This know how will lead to success at imbedding sustainability principles and knowledge into cross-functional teams that deliver actionable results.

How can you build a CSR network that represents diverse perspectives?
Building a CSR network with diverse perspectives is key to implementing a successful corporate sustainability/social impact strategy. To gain diverse perspectives, consider internal and external roles: 1. Create employee councils. Draw from labor, technical experts, through to C-Suite. Tap into cross-functional teams. From legal, HR, Purchasing, Sourcing, Marketing and beyond. This approach breaks down silos. 2. Build an inviting table. It's important to create opportunities for diverse voices. Ensure this is not a checkmark exercise. Include BIPOC, all genders, ages and abilities. 3. Create two-way communications with external stakeholders. NGOs, associations, peers, investors, and others provide important outside perspective.

How do you create a respectful and inclusive CSR team?
Celebrating DEI, and how that's approached internally with employees is important. Taking it one step further, understand how your partners, such as a nonprofit, frames their own DEI priorities and gaps. Then you can align DEI gaps and goals for a win-win. For example, at a prior company, some male employees of color, who weren't convinced they wanted to get in front of youth for a volunteer project, learned that the nonprofit partner had identified greater success when the mentee boys could see someone that looks like them in the mentor role. What was at first reluctant volunteers, resulted in employees that showed up and recruited their colleagues. The program was a huge success and many employees remained long-term volunteers.
