  • Health Care Resource Utilization Associated with Tympanostomy Tube Placement in Pediatric Patients

    BACKGROUND
Otitis media (OM) with effusion (OME) occurs in 90% of children by age 4. Chronic OME may lead to hearing loss; speech, language, and learning difficulties; decreased quality of life; and increased health care utilization. Tympanostomy tube (TT) placement is an established treatment for chronic OME, however otorrhea (or tube otorrhea) is the most common post-TT sequalae.
Although not FDA-approved nor supported by national guidelines, antibiotic eardrops are routinely applied during and after TT placement to prevent tube otorrhea. For otorrhea that occurs at any time with tubes in place, the American Academy of Otolaryngology (AAO) clinical practice guidelines recommend topical antibiotics (eardrops), not oral, to treat tube otorrhea. Antibiotic eardrops are indicated for the treatment of patients with acute OM with tubes (AOMT).

    OBJECTIVE
To characterize the use of prescription antibiotics during the month following tympanostomy tube placement in pediatric patients, and to compare prescription antibiotic use in Medicaid-enrolled and commercially insured populations.

  • Systematic Review of Published Pharmacoeconomic Models

    -

In order to understand and improve payers' experience with economic data we carried a systematic review of pharmacoeconomic models in the peer-reviewed medical literature and characterized its potential usefulness for Healthcare Decision Makers (HCDMs) in making formulary decisions. The disease area selected for this systematic review was multiple sclerosis (MS).
