The US Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology's mission is vital to the US economy, security, and quality of life. Yet, an independent oversight committee uses the word “crumbling” to describe the condition of mission dependent facilities. This report details how current US policy has failed to protect and enable this national asset and future leading capability. It lays out an asset management analysis linking NIST mission achievement and facility performance. It then details an investment strategy to arrest and remedy mission risk incurred by underperforming facilities. NIST’s value to the nation is something all US citizens need to be concerned about given the wide range of threats and challenges America faces. We cannot manage what we do not measure, and we all should be thankful of the work NIST performs giving us the tools and insight we need to solve the world’s biggest problems.
