    Science and Technology

RAIN RFID is a global alliance promoting the universal adoption of UHF RFID technology in a way similar to other wireless technology organizations including NFC Forum, WiFi Alliance and Bluetooth SIG. RAIN uses the GS1 UHF Gen2 protocol which ISO/IEC has standardized as 18000-63. The word RAIN—an acronym derived from RAdio frequency IdentificatioN—is intended as a nod to the link between UHF RFID and the cloud, where RFID-based data can be stored, managed and shared via the Internet.

    THE CHALLENGE

In 2013, lululemon began to evaluate how RFID could help them enhance their in store guest experience and improve inventory accuracy. THE CHALLENGE

In 2013, lululemon began to evaluate how RFID could help them enhance their in store guest experience and improve inventory accuracy. As a result, they determined the need for an inventory solution that would provide real-time, accurate inventory visibility and access for both their sales associate (known as educators) and customers (know as guests). lululemon had previously been using a POS based inventory system and were experiencing limitations. Employees across the organization did not trust the accuracy provided in inventory numbers or ability to locate a product when needed.
    THE SOLUTION
lululemon decided that in order to drive an exceptional guest experience they would need to implement item level RFID. Inventory accuracy was a foundational need to deliver the primary goal of providing optimum consumer experiences at lululemon stores.
In 2013, after developing the business case and custom solution, lululemon decided to launch a pilot with 2 retail stores to provide proof of value for both the business and guest experience. The pilot was deemed a success following a meeting between the Director of Operations and Store Managers from the pilots - when asked how the stores would feel if they took RFID away? The response was undeniable: “We don’t know how we’d do our job without RFID!” This enabled the lululemon team to service consumers with the ultimate brand experience.
After seeing the results and early success lululemon decided to implement RFID across 12 stores in 2014. In late 2014 they decided to move a rollout to all 300 stores in the US and Canada and two in Hong Kong, which went live by September 2015 - an ambitious schedule.
Today all new stores open with RFID and RFID is the foundation of the omnichannel experience that allows inventory levels to be displayed with confidence on the mobile devices of the guest and on the shop.lululemon.com web site.
