How can encryption be used to prevent a data breach?
From a legal perspective, if there is a data breach, depending upon the applicable laws there is a general requirement to report the data breach to the regulators and the owners of the data that has been breached. The crucial organisation/business reputation saving exception is when the data that has been breached was encrypted and the encryption/decryption key is still in your safe custody and control. If this is the case, as far as the law is concerned it is ‘as if’ the data breach never happened Because, whilst there is a risk of the possible use of a quantum computer at some time in the future that might have some chance of breaking the encryption - for all practical purposes, the data is still safe as it is effectively useless.

Consider the mandatory use of an external hardware security access token such as a yubikey where possible. 3. Consider having everyone enroll and undertake the free ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity course. 4. Consider a secure process for complete and organisationally confirmed data erasure from all devices at the end of their useful life. 5. Consider adopting the use of Digital Certificates for Identity Verification and Access Control. 6. Consider a BYOD policy, supported by training and testing to gain assurance that everyone is aware & follows the BYOD policy - build a culture of cybersec
