UnitedHealth Group had an average 3-day turnaround time for prior authorization approvals. As VP IT, I created a machine learning model to automate approvals. Identified 83% of providers would submit prior authorization for <10 procedure codes; created a system that “knew” the provider; provided “templates” for fast entry; bundled all codes that would be approved for the procedure(s); and provided immediate auto approvals. I succeeded in significantly reducing the turnaround time to 3…
