You're struggling to manage difficult clients in Content Strategy. What's the best way to stay resilient?
We talk to clients about understanding who their buyers are and what they want or need, but agencies, freelancers, etc. often don't take the time to get to know their clients. Be thorough in your discovery sessions or initial conversations with your clients or the individuals that you will be working with. Understand their KPIs and help identify the data they need to measure those things. Often times, clients are difficult because of who they report to. Provide them with the data in the form of great storytelling to help them look their best to their superiors. When they you show them that you are there to help them, they tend to trust you more and become less difficult.

You want to build relationships with junior colleagues. How can you avoid coming across as patronizing?
Ask questions first. Ask them to explain from their perspective. And actively listen, meaning listen to hear not to respond. Find the common thread and use that as a way to identify with them. If you're the senior team member, don't always rely on your experience. It's ok to rely on your understanding. Apply your experience and knowledge from there. You can also ask them if they're interested in your perspective. If they feel that they have invited you input, they may be more open and receptive. Talk to them as peers, not as kids. That's a huge turnoff. And don't use a lot of jargon. Speak in simple terms. It never hurts to think back to how you felt when you were launching your career or starting something new!

How can you resolve conflicts between marketing and customer service teams?
Before reacting emotionally, stop and listen to make sure that you aren't saying the same thing in a different way. One invaluable lesson you learn in leadership is that communication is a two-way street - actively listen first, and speak thoughtfully second. Doing those two things lays the groundwork to build on when identifying the goals and objectives, so that you can align on them. It helps to establish the language to use, such as key words, phrases or concepts, to ensure that you all stay on the same page. Once everyone understands his/her/their role and the goals/objectives, it's much easier to collaborate and reach the goals.
