  • Marietta Goes Modern on FOX's "Home Free"

    Atlanta Home Improvement

I wrote this cover story feature article while at Kleber & Associates for Atlanta Home Improvement magazine covering the FOX home renovation competition television show "Home Free." I had secured a product placement opportunity with the producers of the show for the national television coverage, then negotiated with FOX's producers to allow me to write an article reviewing the full renovation project of the home where the K&A client's product was installed.

  • For A&T, An Occasion to Cherish

    Greensboro News & Record

I wrote this op-ed for the Greensboro News-Record as part of a crisis management plan implemented by the N.C. A&T Office of Communications in response to students' outrage with ticketing the Spring 2012 Commencement ceremony. Ticketing was mandatory due to First Lady Michelle Obama being announced as the commencement speaker. As Miss A&T, I leveraged my journalistic writing abilities and influence with the university and Greensboro community to redirect public frustrations.

I served as tradeshow media representation and PR+social media manager for covello at TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2016. covello client Harman Kardon launched the first hackable headphones and wanted to push and showcase this new technology. Originally, they wanted to do a bigger activation at Google I/O, but that didn’t pan out so the collaborative growth company for start-ups and tech companies, covello, suggested TechCrunch Disrupt in both NYC and San Francisco. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were founded for the purpose of giving African-Americans the opportunity to get a higher education. Today, there are 105 HBCUs in the United States and of that group, only TWO institutions have swimming teams. North Carolina A&T State University of Greensboro, NC is one of them.

Swimming is not the most common sport in the African-American community or the MEAC conference, which is exactly the reason our team MUST remain. We are representing our race, where we often go unseen. To add, there are thousands of young swimmers in this country who train all their lives to attain swimming scholarships in hopes of getting a collegiate education. The two HBCUs with teams have provided that opportunity when it otherwise would not have be an option.

The Lady Aggies are the last of a dying breed and we cannot let them go without a fight. Help us save our program and continue to provide higher education for future Lady Aggie swimmers!

The "Living Your Art" Workshop with Hilda Willis was a three-month workshop and showcase event coordinated during my tenure as Miss North Carolina A&T State University. In collaboration with the Richard B. Harrison Players of the A&T Theatre department and the Faculty Lyceum Series committee, the “Living Your Art” workshop and showcase featured performing artists, ranging from vocalists, poets, actors, and dancers, who opened an on-campus concert for Grammy award-winning, R&B/Soul recording artist India Arie. I developed a full strategic public relations campaign for this event, and managed a team of 10+ for optimal execution.

Over 100 students auditioned, but only 20 acts continued on to the first of three workshops that spanned over three months. During the LYA workshop, Hilda Willis provided performance critiques and gave informational tips for breaking into and thriving in the entertainment industry. Hilda is an A&T alumnae, the creator of the “Living Your Art” program, and the current creative director for India Arie. With a month between each workshop, the students were able to apply the advice provided by Hilda, and at the end of the following workshop, student acts were cut. At the end of the third workshop, we had the top five acts, which included a solo singer, an acapella group, actor, interpretive ballet dancer, and a poet.

Over 500 students and faculty attended the “Living Your Art” showcase and “Songversation” concert featuring India Arie. A&T students raved about how amazing their fellow students had performed, as well as India Arie's revealing and revolutionary concert. Many attendees requested more events such as the LYA Showcase and India concert.

The full public relations campaign document for the “Living Your Art” event is available upon request.

I received this award due to my service as the Public Relations chair and Young Alumni chair of the Atlanta Alumni Chapter for N.C. A&T State University. Since assuming these roles, membership increased 53% within my first year with the largest number of financially-active young alum (with 10 years of college graduation). As PR chair, I also used social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and GroupMe) to increase our reach, communication and engagement of A&T alum in the greater Atlanta area. Since this membership growth, the Atlanta Alumni Chapter also earned the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame's "Large Chapter of the Year Award" in September 2016.
