As a strategist I spend most of my spare time reading, trying to get a better understanding of the world, cultures, and people that come from different backgrounds than myself. Shelter-At-Home has given many of us more time than normal to invest in this, so I put together a list of my 10 favorite books to hopefully inspire others to dive in as well.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

It feels almost disrespectful to take meaning from this book and apply it to our current time but I suppose it was his intention when gifting it to the world. Dr. Frankl's "Man's Search For Meaning" is an incredible look at how to deal with a situation thrust upon you, forcing you to deal with a life completely out of your control.

In this book, you will find perspective, inspiration, and a fresh outlook to strengthen your mind for whatever may come to you in the future. Read it, slowly, and with intention. Then read it again.

Walking With The Wind by John Lewis A man of passion, conviction, and action, John Lewis lead by what he did, not just what he said.

I grew up learning about the civil rights movement, but I would be nieve to say I ever really understood the depth and context around all of the pivotal moments. One book will never bring you to a full and true understanding of something so significant, but this book is a good start. I hope it has as profound of an effect on you as it did on me.

Shoe Dog by Phil Knight I have read many memoirs from founders and CEOs of various companies but never have I read such an honest account of what it is really like to build a company.

The story of Nike is an incredible journey and there is no better way to learn it than through the words of its creator.

Behind The Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo Pulitzer Prize-winning author Katherine Boo spent over 4 years following families living in a Mumbai slum, what came out of it is this beautiful and honest portrayal of life and humanity in one of the world's many forgotten slums.

This book challenged me to see my place in the world differently, to see the overlooked, and to humanize those we often lump into statistics. In a time where we can't travel to learn about the world, this book does an incredible job of transporting you there, connecting you to characters like no other non-fiction book I've ever read has done before.

The Better Angels of Our Nature by Steven Pinker Steven Pinker does an incredible job of using data to show how and why violence has been on the decline in our civilization. With media often feeding us a continuous flow of shocking stories and "breaking news", it can be helpful to look at facts for what they are.

This book also challenges that this decline is not guaranteed and without a balance of science, reason, empathy, and economic support/growth in impoverished communities, this trend could easily reverse. Read it for an academic perspective on the macro-world we live in today.

Chasing The Scream by Johann Hari The traditional narrative we have been taught about the war on drugs has proven false, causing more harm than good within society and particularly within communities of color. Chasing The Scream beautifully lays out this argument, helping readers understand the historical context of the war on drugs, its impact on society, and what we can do about it.

Factfulness by Hans Rosling When the world is at it's craziest moments, coming back to facts and a long-term look at society keeps us rooted in a clear view of where things stand. Factfulness is filled with data that helps us understand where we are in the progress of humanity, and helps us see through the fog of day-to-day struggles.

The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan Every brand strategist has an obligation to understand the direct and indirect effects of their decisions. Omnivore's Dilemma is a perfect example of this, diving into the cause and effects of decisions within the food industry and their broader implications on our health and the health of our environment.

Long Walk To Freedom by Nelson Mandela I had long been wanting to read this book and "shelter-at-home" provided the perfect opportunity to do so.

I have many takeaways from Mandela's life but if I had to choose one it would be to show up as you are, however you can, with whatever capacity you have to give at any point in your life. For almost 40 years, Nelson Mandela's involvement in the ANC was a side-hustle; a nights and weekends effort alongside a day job as a lawyer and he was still able to have such a profound impact. He didn't enter the movement as the leader he would become, he entered as he was and allowed the movement to shape him into the man history remembers him as.

Between The World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates I read this book back in February, shortly before the recent Black Lives Matter protests and the murder of George Floyd. As a white-liberal-male, I have always intellectually understood there was racism and more specifically, racism with police towards Black and brown communities, but I admit I never fully understood it emotionally (nor do I think I ever will fully understand it). This book does an incredible job of bringing you as close as possible for someone who will never experience systemic racism to viscerally feel the argument.
