Jatin Mehta, 45, came to the United States from India with his wife and son in 1997, lured by a post-doctoral fellowship in Ohio. The opportunity looked interesting but the pay was inadequate, and Mehta was about to return to India when his friends suggested he put his technology skills to work in the software industry instead.

Jatin Mehta, 45, came to the United States from India with his wife and son in 1997, lured by a post-doctoral fellowship in Ohio. The opportunity looked interesting but the pay was inadequate, and Mehta was about to return to India when his friends suggested he put his technology skills to work in the software industry instead.

Mehta, who has a doctorate in biomedical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay and experience as chief architect of a biomedical department at Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai, spent the next seven years managing IT projects as a consultant for a variety of businesses including some Fortune 25 companies.

In 1999, he began placing IT staff as a side business of his own, while still doing consulting for other companies. He was able to place some Java programmers and built on that, eventually moving into website design and optimization, and software development.

About three years ago, his wife got a job. “I had back up to pay my bills,” said Mehta, and so he began devoting himself full time to growing his company, MetaSense Inc. in Mount Laurel, N.J.

Now a naturalized citizen, Mehta is active in the National Indo Cooperative Enterprises Inc., a nonprofit that supports Asian culture for Indians living in the United States, and the North South Foundation, a volunteer nonprofit that provides scholarships to needy children in India who show academic promise. Many of his employees are Indians whom he sponsors to bring to the United States, Mehta said.

“He’s generous with his time,” said Paula Fett, who is director of small business development for the business incubator at Burlington County College. “He gives of his time in the incubator offering other small business owners advice. … He’s all about just helping out others when he can and how he can.”
