One of the pitfalls to avoid as a leader is assuming if someone seems overwhelmed then you should give them less. It may seem logical but before making assumptions I always encourage leaders to ask compassionate questions that get to the core of what is going on. How are feeling about your workload right now? If you had the opportunity to change it what would you suggest? Also ask them what they would like to work on, what lights them up, what drains their energy? And listen with curiosity vs judgment. Knowing what triggers you and how to respond versus react is critical to being a great leader and staying calm in the face of challenging situations. One of the tools I use to teach leaders how to handle these triggers is the power of questions. When you feel triggered there are specific questions you can ask yourself based on what your response typically is. Questions are often the key to consistent change.

In the decades of work I have done with leaders, nothing happens without self-awareness first. That is why it's the foundation to bring a great leader. Awareness creates choice and choice creates freedom. Without awareness we are not able to change or even recognize something needs to change. If every leader focused on increasing their self-awareness everyone benefits.
