  • Automatically Selecting Alert Modes Based on Location

    Issued US 9,973,896

This patent relates to a system for selecting alert modes for mobile devices based upon location. For example, a phone may be automatically set to vibrate rather than to ring when in a movie theater or other location where minimum disruption is desired. Conversely, a phone may be set to ring at the highest volume when at a loud outdoors event. The system achieves this functionality by obtaining the current location of a device and determining a classification of the location based on mapping…

The system achieves this functionality by obtaining the current location of a device and determining a classification of the location based on mapping data stored by the system that identifies a feature of the location. In addition, this patent considers the velocity of the device in managing any changes to the alert modes. For example, if a user is merely driving by a location holding a loud outdoors event (i.e., the phone has a high velocity), the user’s phone would not change alert modes.

  • Controlling Access to Services via Usage Models

    Issued US 8,024,225

Techniques are described for facilitating interactions between computing systems, such as in accordance with usage models that are configured for available services by the providers of the services. In some situations, the services are Web services, and an electronic Web service ("WS") marketplace is provided via which third-party WS providers make their WSes available to third-party WS consumers who purchase access to those WSes via the electronic marketplace based on configured usage models…

In some situations, the services are Web services, and an electronic Web service ("WS") marketplace is provided via which third-party WS providers make their WSes available to third-party WS consumers who purchase access to those WSes via the electronic marketplace based on configured usage models selected by the consumers. Some or all of the one or more usage models configured for an available WS may each have associated use prices and/or non-price use conditions, and if so access to those WSes using those usage models may be provided only if a consumer requesting access provides appropriate payment and otherwise satisfies the specified use conditions for a selected usage model.

Projects

  • AWS Road Trip

    -

In the spring of 2013 I planned and executed an AWS Road Trip. Over the course of three weeks I drove 5,550 miles and spoke to cloud computing enthusiasts in 15 cities across the United States. I made extensive use of social media on this trip, including a daily blog (generated by Octopress and hosted on Amazon S3), time lapse videos, tweets, and more.
