You're facing pushback from colleagues on a high-cost technical solution. How can you win them over?
Data driven justification on impact, profitability, and operations is key. Demonstrate how the technology will be essential to support the organizations mission. That the counterfactual of “not” adopting will risk near term competitiveness or longer term viability. It will be necessary to make the business case to the CEO/CFO showcasing bottomline contributions to efficiency and profitability over 1, 3, and 5 years. In terms of cashflow, P&L, and the balance sheet. The other critical areas to address are any barriers to adoption & disruptions to the organization specific to workforce and customers/beneficiaries. A strong case needs to be made that the pain/cost of adoption, is necessary to survive and thrive versus the status quo.

Here's how you can enhance a struggling non-profit program's performance.
It is important to consider the type of goal (financial, programatic, operational), audience (funder, C-Suite, or board) assessing the root cause of the “failure” or problem. Also any indicators that set off the “alarm”. —As President or CEO was a fund raising target missed. Will this impact future operations, staffing, and sustainability? —As a funder, was there a contractual short fall in meeting a benchmark e.g. maintaining X% beneficiaries on treatment. Is a performance improvement plan (PIP) needed to course correct? Ideally the organization, board, and funders have a steering committee to host regular communications. KPIs are monitored routinely to course correct or provide incentives for achievements & high impact innovations.

Here's how you can enhance your problem-solving skills as a non-profit program developer using technology.
Non-profit, does not mean no income. Thus, in an increasing competitive landscape for limited channels to raise funding either through grants or philanthropic giving, the key question is, “How does the technology increase the organization’s value.” Whether through improved operational efficiency or direct impact to beneficiaries of programs. This needs to be clear. Adopting technology for the sake of technology is never the answer & can create more headaches, than benefits. Thus being strategic and focused is key to a successful outcome: Adopt technology that will create measurable contributions that maximize resources and impact to programs. By doing so, this will make the organization more attractive for future income opportunities.

What do you do if your innovative fundraising techniques are met with resistance?
Perhaps the most significant challenge to achieving results for innovative or blended financing in global health, is the harmonization of different public & private financial mechanisms, procurement rules, & authorities to implement beyond the conceptual design. From timing of a launch to interim/closeout KPIs that define impact & return, to be successful, the steering committee of collaborators should ideally be: 1) Flexible in their approaches & adaptable to change. 2) Responsive to new ideas from the field. 3) Focus on respective organizational strengths that are complimentary & synergistic. 4) Clearly codified (MOU) objectives, resource contributions, establish routine communication channels, and a process for dispute resolution.

One of the most important applications of lab-on-a-chip devices in medicine and related disciplines is disease diagnostics, which involves steps from biological sample/analyte loading to storage, detection, and analysis. The chapters collected in this book detail recent advances in these processes using microfluidic devices and systems. The reviews of portable devices for diagnostic purposes are likely to evoke interest and raise new research questions in interdisciplinary fields (e.g., efficient MEMS/microfluidic engineering driven by biological and medical applications).
