Baby boomers represent an important and growing customer segment in the health sector, at the same time as new digital tools for health management are proliferating. I worked on a team of design thinkers to plan and execute an ethnographic study of baby boomers to better understand their perceptions and lived experience of health and digital technology as part of the Deep Customer Insight Course at the Rotman School of Management. The research design involved semi-structured user interviews, observation, photo-journaling and consultation with social scientists. Key insights included that baby boomers are not afraid of technology and are willing to learn. However, social connections – largely with family – play an important role in motivating this segment to adopt new digital tools, including for health.
