What are the best ways to foster innovation and retain employees?
Rewarding innovation will take different shapes and forms depending on your ecosystem, but one thing I've found that works well for incentivizing innovation is to look for opportunities to publicly acknowledge outstanding character or behavior that embraces innovation. This might look like creating a new award category at an Industry event or conference, or possibly even creating an entirely new award ceremony! Either way, by publicly recognizes those who embrace innovation and sharing the specific or tangible ways that they have fostered innovation, you can paint a picture of how others can pursue innovative solutions.

What are the best ways to foster innovation and retain employees?
In my experience, how willing someone is to experiment and learn is greatly impacted by how we measure success. For example; Measuring success based on the number of experiments or tests vs the expected outcome can help reframe what 'failure' looks like and encourage that this is a safe space for an experimental mindset. I personally experienced the positive benefits of this from former bosses who set the expectation that success was in what we learned from the experiment and from the results, not from the result itself. A similar approach can be applied to learning. When we measure the success of learning a new skill based on only a grade, we may discourage someone from learning it in the first place.

What are the best ways to foster innovation and retain employees?
During weekly or regularly team meetings, I've fostered a culture of trust, respect and innovation by dedicating the first 5 minutes to team gratitudes / shoutouts, and the last 10 minutes to how the team can help you get unstuck. By first allowing for intentional expressions of respect through gratitudes and shouting out ways that one teammate helped another, the team is able to build trust that compounds with each meeting. It also sets a positive tone for the rest of the meeting. By asking your team to share how others might help them with a challenge or with getting 'unstuck', it gives everyone an opportunity to solve from a different perspective and often leads to a more simple or innovative solution.
