I recently read an article by Ansel Herz for The Stranger newspaper in Seattle, titled “Does media coverage of school shootings lead to more school shootings.” His article hit me hard and captured some of the most compelling arguments that surround the horrific shootings we have witnessed in recent years. Herz captured a thought-provoking revelation regarding how shooters may serve to model behavior for other vulnerable youth and adults and the unintended contributions of media coverage, as has been shown with media coverage contributing to suicide contagions the pattern of suicides occurring closely in time and place. In fact, several of the perpetrators of mass violence, such as the shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary School, studied the coverage of prior perpetrators, emulated what they had “accomplished” and sought to cause more destruction. Many shooters either kill themselves or expect to be killed by law enforcement, thereby underscoring the link between mass shootings and suicide.
