Advertising has changed dramatically in the last 15 years. Technology has changed the way we both consume and distribute information, and as a result, mass mailings have given way to targeted messaging and interactive conversations with the customer. This technology is more complex, meaning hundreds of moving parts. Requirements must be gathered and documented, risks assessed, development planned, and testing performed. All this complexity means that advertising projects, once run by Account Service representatives, must now be managed by project managers.

Organizations that have never before had project management are now forced to create PMOs. These PMOs bring the planning, execution and reporting needed to ensure projects deliver on time, budget and scope, but change is always difficult. Those in ad agencies that have never experienced the organization necessary to efficiently run such projects may not immediately embrace process, methodology, documentation, defined roles, or ever consider risk.

With the creation of a PMO in an advertising agency comes evaluating skillsets of current employees and acquiring necessary skillsets where applicable. It means creation of process and methodology, construction of template repositories, definition of new roles and responsibilities. Most importantly in the successful creation of a PMO, is the navigation of politics and acquiring solid and lasting management support. These are the tips and tricks to obtaining buy in, and building a solid foundation for your PMO, in the face of a culture not familiar with Project Management, and unsure of the change dictated by management.
