My family has a long history of doing business in Guatemala and direct involvement with numerous charitable activities, mostly focused on support for education and assistance for the rural indigenous Mayan people in the highlands region of Guatemala. In 2007 our family made a large donation of land around the town of San Andrés Semetebaj (adjacent to Lake Atitlán in the highlands of Guatemala) to the University of the Valley of Guatemala (UVG) through the US Foundation (USFUVG), which I now…
My family has a long history of doing business in Guatemala and direct involvement with numerous charitable activities, mostly focused on support for education and assistance for the rural indigenous Mayan people in the highlands region of Guatemala. In 2007 our family made a large donation of land around the town of San Andrés Semetebaj (adjacent to Lake Atitlán in the highlands of Guatemala) to the University of the Valley of Guatemala (UVG) through the US Foundation (USFUVG), which I now chair. USFUVG (a US 501(c)(3) charity) was set up originally as a conduit for official foreign assistance funds from ASHA (USAID’s Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (USAID/ASHA), for infrastructure, commodities and equipment, from which UVG has greatly benefitted for many years. Over time USFUVG’s activities have expanded to include support for the University and its students more broadly, particularly for scholarships. The more the rural indigenous Mayan people of Guatemala improve their lives locally the less likely they are to become part of the significant issue we have in the US with unaccompanied children from Mexico and Central America on our southern border. USFUVG benefits from both institutional support and assistance from individual donors with interest in this mission. USFUVG is making a positive, powerful contribution to a better Guatemala.
