“I worked for John when he was Mercy Corps’ Director in China and it was one of the best experiences of my career! John is talented in understanding a team’s strengths and weaknesses, allowing him to provide guidance and earning him the respect of the team along the way. Personally, I felt that I always had his trust and that allowed me to realize my full potential. Unlike some leaders, John was always decisive, never ambiguous. He had the entire trust of the team as a leader, even during the emergency response to the Lushan Earthquake. His strategic acumen allowed him to grasp the core problems within a complex context allowing work to move forward despite challenges. The Chinese context is always challenging for foreigners, and perhaps even more so for NGOs operating in sensitive rural areas. John led the organization to not only implement its programs successfully, but built positive and constructive partnerships with the government. I attribute this to his wisdom, diplomatic skills and political savvy. John exemplifies the best qualities of a good leader, and I have been privileged to have had the opportunity to work with him.”
