What do you do if you want to ensure the success of your employee development programs?
A community needs to be involved in any implementation of employee development - both internally and externally. Who are those managers, leaders, key stakeholders and consultants that can help build a community of support, accountability and flexibility to needs. It's more than merely many hands making light work (which is good!), but also, it's the fact that we need many eyes to observe it all. Evaluation will be the most substantial when various viewpoints are brought together. The common approach to implementation activates consistently and strongly.

What do you do if you want to ensure the success of your employee development programs?
True workforce development is needed in order to assess competency gaps and to ascertain external competitive realities. Those two areas will highlight opportunities for employee development and redirection. We can get used to filling open roles with the same requirements instead of looking to see what that role might have evolved into recently or needs to evolve into. Assessment of the work and the people performing it is a must.

What do you do if you want to ensure the success of your employee development programs?
The obvious answer is to align with business goals. However, the rub of it is that organizations still struggle with transparently sharing and explaining these goals to the staff at large. Without that investment of communication and time, employee development denigrates into a checklist for completion. The learning environment desired is unrealized.

How can you manage power struggles in a peer support group?
One of the areas often overlooked in the power struggle in origination. Too often the management or leadership team is setting up contributors to compete against one another. If the expressed desire is for a collaborative team, but the implied expectation is individual contribution, then the dichotomy will often lean into human nature. In that circumstance, struggle occurs almost every time. Be mindful about team construct. An impartial leader should look at any power struggle situation, even if it’s crossing divisional lines, in order to provide an unbiased view of why this is happening. If your company values transparency and innovation, then this methodology often works and works quickly to realign towards that team focused innovation.
