In 2003, my editor asked me for a middle-grade (Harry Potter-level) novel about the theater. I told her that it was a "boring" subject for a book, always with the "we need to put on a show to save the theater" plot. Snore. She curtly replied, "Then write me one that isn't boring." So I did. Five years later, it was done. The book is currently being shopped by my agent, so it is no longer available online, but stay tuned. Reprints of original edition can be found on Amazon.

  • Breaking Out of the Innovation Box

    Harvard Business Review

Sustainable innovation requires a new approach: Instead of being largely isolated projects, innovation initiatives need to gain access to the insights and capabilities of other companies. But how can businesses traffic in such sensitive information without giving their competitors an advantage?

  • Solving the “We Need To Share But We Can’t Share” problem.

In 2001, Nick Donofrio, then SVP of IBM Technology, posed this conundrum:

We spend billions in research, but many billions more are being spent by others. If we all knew everything about each other's work, who knows what we might discover together? But...even though we can share some open source work, there's a lot more we can't share.

This problem became a career's challenge. After spending many millions running dozens of experiments all over the world – with enterprises, governments, startups and venture capitalists – the result is a clear set of insights, practices and technologies to help legally-separate entities reduce costs, increase customer value, and innovate together...without having to risk information leaks, misappropriation and misalignment.

My first attempt at addressing this conundrum took me to Australia, the UK and Germany, implementing private/public partnerships that used trusted intermediaries to carefully find win-win connections between legally separate entities without directly exposing information between them. It worked, but it didn’t scale. Today, we have zero knowledge cryptography, AI (in particular, transposing vectors and comparing corpora under encryption) and other techniques to automate and scale our ability to improve multi-party coordination and cooperation without having to risk data leaks or misappropriation of private intentions.
