The existing University of Houston Hofheinz Pavilion was a sports arena whose time had come and gone. The ghosts of Phi Slamma Jamma haunted the venue, which had not seen the same level of energy or success in decades. Constrained by an existing aesthetic that was no longer appropriate for a 21st Century university and a structural solution that limited both volume and capacity, the pavilion was in need of a rebirth. The building lacked the basics in accessible accommodations and code compliant occupant services, not uncommon for a building of its era.
The team employed a unique return on investment (ROI) design strategy to create zones of investment in the seating bowl aligned to where financial models indicated the greatest benefit could be achieved. T The original arena entry has been elevated above the adjacent sidewalk by approximately 10 to 15 feet; this offset in site gradient has been replaced with areas of grass and plantings. The AECOM design team retained these expressions, but inverted the grade creating sloping entry lobbies that created access into the new mezzanine level and improved overall building circulation. To address the challenges of the building’s concrete skin and expressive roof panels, the design team elected to lift each primary corner of the building creating a new transparent entry sequence and allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the building’s circulation concourses. The solution was to take a building experience that had been defined by low, dark, linear spatial experiences and introduce new verticality, daylight and expression of form that complements and integrates into the original remaining building architecture. The resulting Fertitta Center, renamed after the project’s primary benefactor, is a design statement that now relates to its contemporary university context while preserving a nod to the arena’s original history and tradition.

The Kings proposed a bold vision for an “arena 3.0”, a “21st Century Coliseum,” and next-generation sports and entertainment venue. The AECOM team, bringing more NBA design experience than any other firm, responded with a unique indoor-outdoor design that reflects the regional lifestyle, offers dramatic views and creates an unparalleled setting for sports, concerts and other events.
In downtown Sacramento, California, AECOM and the NBA Sacramento Kings have created a sports and entertainment venue like no other:

    • Golden 1 Center features a unique indoor-outdoor design with giant aircraft hangar doors, open views around the concourse, and a seating bowl that puts more people close to the action, offering an unmatched fan experience.

    • The arena anchors a central entertainment, shopping and dining district, has triggered a downtown resurgence, and is bringing Sacramento and the Kings international attention.

    • Golden 1 Center will be the world’s most sustainable indoor professional-sports arena, 100% solar-powered and on target for LEED Gold certification.

AECOM designed the arena by bringing together an expert team of urban planners, economists, sports designers, architects, high-performance engineers and landscape architects.

Together, our design team worked with the Kings and the community to realize a powerful vision—an arena that embraces the region’s warm climate and outdoor lifestyle, the City’s aspirations, and the team’s determination to provide fans with an unparalleled experience in an exceptionally sustainable and cost-efficient facility.

Extending the signature style of the university’s core campus gothic architecture limestone buildings, the Bill Synder Family Stadium project began a transformation of the sprawling athletic campus facility design vocabulary. Several elements of the building’s design pay homage to the state’s agrarian heritage, rural community culture, and scenic Flint Hills landscape. These elements include wall plaques with the names of every county carved in the stone and a walkway containing the name of every city ensuring all Kansas residents feel connected to the university. Then Athletic Director John Currie deemed the project to be a welcoming landmark to the residents of its western communities as they arrive to campus for game day. A massive central arch forms the main entry to the stadium complex, aligned to the central site access further accentuating the importance of its role of the overall composition. An arrange of multipurpose hospitality rooms and premium seating are paired with large outdoor terraces encouraging the connection of pregame club amenities to the robust tailgate party occurring in the lot below. The building created space to allow for the relocation of athletic media and operations into the stadium full time leveraging the proximity of this staff to game day. A unique athletic nutrition performance dining hall was designed to transform into a unique food-based club concept for game day — the only one of its kind in the Big XII conference. The entire building was clad in hand-hewn limestone, a subtle detail which provides a recognizable human scale and helps make the massive complex more pedestrian friendly.
