What does an administrative executive do?
This role is incredibly paradoxical. You are not the decision-maker, but you must constantly make decisions. You have the least to 'show for your work' but your work is incredibly woven into that of others, and its fingerprints are everywhere across the organization. You lack authority but must act for those who do, often with great consequence. Your work is largely repetitive in nature, yet nearly impossible to quantify, document, or predict. The administrative role is not for the meek or mild.

How can you thrive in a fast-paced business environment?
Do not be hesitant to manipulate existing systems, trends, softwares, processes, etc. into an end result that works best for you. This may mean blending many pieces together into a new whole, or even working backwards - analyzing what your dream fix would be, and then finding a way to make that happen holistically - rather than acting retroactively to patch holes as they arise.

How can you handle last-minute scheduling requests from executives?
One of the most delicate yet critical roles we can play for our executives is that of the cynic+champion hybrid. Meaning, no more excitement or intention is needed - the executive already possesses that, which is why he's coming to me. What I CAN offer is constructive pushback. So, my first move is to protect the existing schedule - each item or meeting was carefully input for a reason, at its origin. I pair this with a direct series of questions to determine if this last-minute schedule change is truly necessary, or can wait. Then, I reiterate the priority that any conflicting appointments had at the time of booking, and assess whether that value has now decreased in relative comparison, or simply been forgotten momentarily.
