An effective technique I have used to lead more inclusive discussions is to redirect the energy of a very dominant speaker. For example, assign them a role that engages their strengths while allowing others to speak. For example, you could say, “Kara, you have great insights. Could you help by capturing key points made by the team and give a summary at the end? This way, we can capture everyone’s ideas.” This not only involves Kara in a constructive way but also opens the floor for a more balanced discussion. This reaffirms the importance of their contribution while emphasizing the team’s collective wisdom. Managing team dialogue well is about creating an atmosphere where more can contribute, allowing the best ideas to surface.

Executives drown in data. Be their translator. Craft stories that resonate. Use metaphors (e.g., our talent pipeline is like a sieve leaking talent from diverse communities) to bring clarity. Focus on the "so what?" (growth = hiring needs?) Don't just inform, empower by providing meaning. Executives crave actionable insights, not reports. While data is the foundation for impact with execs, explain the 'so what' of the data with a compelling narrative. Clear stories become the launchpad for better decisions. Imagine a presentation on customer churn. Weave the narrative of a frustrated customer into the data, highlighting the impact on business. This personalizes the numbers and sparks action.

Start by using active listening to rephrase and ensure you understand the question's nuances. This also allows me more time to think on one track, while reflecting back what they've asked on another. Of course, prepare by anticipating what might be asked. When responding: -Position your eyes and body towards the person to convey openness and genuine interest. -Begin your response, tentatively, e.g., "If I understood you correctly, in my experience, I've seen xxx be effective at yyy." -Ask the audience, "Does anyone have a quick reflection or experience in addressing this--we'd love to hear your perspective?" Then affirm where you have agreement. -If stuck, offer to follow-up within a few days and thank them for the insightful question.

When speaking about a topic that matters deeply to you, it's essential to reconnect with your own passion. This can make you more engaging and impactful. Here’s how to harness that passion: Reconnect with why the topic excites you—positive change, inspiration, or personal experiences. Share personal stories to illustrate relevance and genuine investment. Highlight why the topic matters and share the impact possible when they get it right. Then, pay attention to your audience’s reactions. Positive feedback, such as nods, smiles, and attentive expressions demonstrate your message is resonating. Finally, use expressive body language—laugh, sigh, infuse emotion. Your enthusiasm can inspire, making your message memorable and impactful.
