How do you become a transportation specialist?
Transportation engineers and planners are better when they experience and observe the transportation system from multiple perspectives (e.g., as a pedestrian, cyclist, low speed vehicle driver, driver, bus and train passenger) and when they talk to a diverse group of people to understand their mobility challenges (e.g., the homeless, single parents, children, teenagers, families, the elderly, etc). I see far too many transportation engineers/planners making recommendations or decisions that are from one perspective (i.e., their own limited view), leaving out the diverse population transportation serves.
