Here's how you can harmonize your social impact passion with your career's financial needs.
Think hard whether or not you want to classify your social impact enterprise as for profit or “for impact” as a 501c3. When someone hears the word nonprofit they assume that such an organization is working for the public good; that it serves the homeless, protects the weak, exists for the benefit of society at large. Hearing that something is a “nonprofit” immediately gives a sense that the organization is trustworthy and the people running it are driven by a charitable agenda. It’s a word that shuts down the critical faculties and grants an instantaneous moral stature to any organization to which it is applied. Nonprofits receive benefits that aren’t granted to private corporations including unfettered access to government agencies .

Here's how you can transition into a career in social impact from a different field.
Transitioning into a social impact career isn’t as difficult as people may think. If you are the type of person who desires a sense of purpose in your career and have a passion for making a difference, then it becomes a matter of applying your skills to a field that welcomes changemakers no matter what their backgrounds. I say this based on my own experiences as a 20 year Marine Veteran who went on to serve as the Chief of Staff at the US Chamber of Commerce before finding my way back to service running three national nonprofits that impacted 4 million service men and women and their families between 2011-2021. I’m now the CEO of a social impact consulting firm named ZeroMils. Bottom line: if you have a heart for impact — follow it.
